Designer’s Statement
The product design I would propose to Kiehl’s as way of encouraging their costumers to behave positively towards the environment would be a set of re-usable bottles made out of soap stone. The bottles’ function and the material they are made of would work together as a solution for sustainable packaging design. The re-usable bottles would reduce the waste created by costumers that buy a new bottle every time they need more products, and the use of soap stone would work as a better alternative to the use of plastic because at the same time that plastic fabrication and recycling processes expel toxic fumes that are extremely harmful to the environment, soap stone is ready to be used in its natural state, not having to pass trough chemical processes. Aesthetically, the bottles’ design is shaped by the way the human hand holds objects. Deep imprints were carved where the hands gripped comfortably. The bottle’s handcraft beauty would also work as an appealing element to the costumer that would have his habits shaped by the relation with the product.
